4 - Blu M. The Day I Felt Like Gordon Ramsey

Many people have heard of the saying “food is the key to my heart.” In my case, this is most certainly true. Ever since I could remember, my experiences with food have all been memorable, whether it’s eating a dish from my childhood (served in the same exact bowl), or sharing these really horrible fries at a diner with one of my best friends. Each meal has come with an equally amazing memory. But, there is just one experience that has yet to be topped by any other.

Michael Warring.

Exactly 10 months ago today, I got the lucky privilege of eating at Michael Warring, a Michelin star restaurant, for my 16th birthday. It amazes me that I’m able to let those words spill out of my mouth. I got to experience this kind of luxury just in the duration of a meal, and it was something I could only imagine someone famous doing,

Upon arrival, the atmosphere hit me in the face, like walking out in the early morning with fog rolling all around. The setting was intimate, around 6 tables with counter seating. It was so similar to sitting at my own bar area at home, kitchen perfectly in view. Now, that’s enough about setting, let’s talk food.

One thing that stood out about this dinner was that it was a prix fixed meal, meaning that each dish was already chosen for you at a set price. Overall, there were 12 courses and there was no changing what had been set in stone, or pots and pans. Rather than touching on each dish, I’ll be talking about some of my favorite bites, since 12 courses would be quite difficult to fit in the word count I have remaining.

One of the most remarkable tasting experiences I have ever had, and it was within the first bite of my meal. There was this small savory custard dish, pictured at the top of the middle image below. I hate any kind of egg dish, but this one really was incredible. The contrasting savory flavors, freshly paired with radishes and… raw meat?! Beef tartare, to be exact. I was shocked by the fact that I could enjoy something as peculiar, as WONDERFUL as this.

Now, my favorite piece from this entire experience was within the main courses. Truffle agnolotti, essentially like little fancy tortellini. The entirety of the 12 course meal combined an asian influence with that of an Italian essence, something I never would really think. This dish though… wow, umami is the only word that can explain what I experienced. If you have ever watched Ratatouille, and saw what Remy imagined when he ate that strawberry and cheese together. That was absolutely me. The experience felt surreal! The savoriness of the little pasta pockets, the earthiness of the truffle, the sweetness of the soy mirin broth, wow. Just thinking about this is making my mouth water… The only thing that I didn’t like about this dish was that there was so little! I could’ve easily scarfed down 50 bowls, I swear.

The entire experience I had at Michael Warring was incredible, and I really wish to go back again, despite that huge ticket price… I’m sorry mom! It was most definitely one of the best dishes I have ever had in my life, flavor experiences I had never imagined. GEEZ, getting a little emotional. I felt like a celebrity there, I felt so honored to eat something so wonderful

I felt like Gordon Ramsey.

  1. By the time I’m writing this, I’ve just eaten dinner and am practically full, but reading the imagery and visualizations of how the food looked and tasted makes me hungry again. I always assumed chefs always had particular tastes especially when it comes to others’ cooking, and this really shows it.

  2. First off, wow that is one crazy way to celebrate your 16th birthday, mine was unfortunately spent in quarantine. But second off, I am a person who doesn’t eat a lot in my day. Most days I don’t even eat lunch, and it isn’t a problem or anything I’m just never really hungry. After reading this my stomach wants to eat everything in the vicinity, I never thought food could sound so and delicious through a blog post. I wish I could say I could taste the food from here, but I doubt anything I could taste matches up to the real thing.
